Elsewhere at Pt. Reyes

Offset fence on the Earthquake Trail

What else is there to do at Pt. Reyes? It is a big place, and we never have been into every corner. In four years of coming to the place, sometimes as often as once a month, I think we have only scratched the surface–especially since Lewis, little or large, has been around that whole time. It is hard to go far on a hiking trail with a toddler. One discovery that was a surprise for me was that we could go further when he was littler; I could carry him as far as five miles on my back.

As I mentioned before, we hiked the Earthquake Trail the afternoon we arrived, in the rain. It is right next to the Bear Valley Visitor Center, and short enough that Lewis could do it easily, so short, in fact, that we did not really get wet. The trail literally follows the San Andreas Fault. At one point, the National Park Service has big markers in the ground showing just where the fault runs, so you can note, a little nervous, the exact moment when you cross the fault. That point is, roughly, right at the famous Offset Fence. That is a photograph of the fence above. It was here in 1906 when the earthquake destroyed San Francisco. The fence snapped in two when the earth moved, and the shifting plates moved the two halves of the fence eighteen feet apart.
